The historical and legendary encounter you are referring to is the meeting between the 16-year-old saint Sant Dnyaneshwar (also known as Jnaneshwar or Jnanadeva) and the mystical hatha yogi Changdev Maharaj, who was believed to have lived for 1,400 years through his intense yogic powers.
This famous 13th-century event is a celebrated story in Maharashtrian Bhakti tradition, highlighting the triumph of spiritual wisdom (Atma-Gyan) over ego and supernatural powers (Siddhis).
Changdev Maharaj was an extraordinarily powerful yogi who had defied death 42 times using his occult powers. When he heard about the vast spiritual fame of the young teenager Dnyaneshwar and his three siblings (Nivrittinath, Sopan, and Muktabai), he grew curious and decided to write a letter to Dnyaneshwar.
However, Changdev faced an ego dilemma: he could not figure out how to address Dnyaneshwar. He couldn't address him as "Chiranjeev" (a blessing for a younger person) because Dnyaneshwar was a highly evolved spiritual master, but his pride also prevented him from addressing the 16-year-old boy as a superior or "Guru". Frustrated, Changdev sent a completely blank piece of paper.
When the siblings received it, Dnyaneshwar’s younger sister, Muktabai, famously remarked, "Even after living for 1,400 years, this yogi remains as blank as this paper." Dnyaneshwar then wrote 65 profound verses of Vedantic truth on that paper and sent it back. This text is known today as the Changdev Pasashti.
2. The Grand Meeting: Tiger vs. Wall
Unable to grasp the depth of the verses, Changdev decided to visit Dnyaneshwar in person to display his supernatural might. To awe the young saint, Changdev arrived riding a ferocious tiger, wielding a venomous cobra as a whip, accompanied by thousands of his disciples.
At that time, Dnyaneshwar and his siblings were relaxing, sitting on a simple masonry mud wall. When they were informed that the great yogi was approaching, Dnyaneshwar decided to warmly welcome his guest. Instead of walking, Dnyaneshwar patted the inanimate stone wall and commanded it to fly forward. The heavy stone wall rose into the air and carried the siblings to meet Changdev.
3. The Surrender
When Changdev saw a group of teenagers commanding an inanimate object (the stone wall) to fly, his pride was completely shattered. He realized that while his own siddhis gave him control over living creatures (like the tiger and snake), Dnyaneshwar’s spiritual realization gave him mastery over nature itself.
Changdev immediately dismounted the tiger, cast away the serpent, and bowed at the feet of the young saint. He renounced his pride, surrendered his ego, and became a disciple of the siblings, choosing Dnyaneshwar's young sister Muktabai as his ultimate spiritual guide.
